For the hundredth last time,
or was it thousandth?
The glass was set down
a trifle too hard and fast
Grimace splits the face
deep with valleys carved by
the River Heartbreak
flowing to Sea of Disappointment
The puckered lips burst forth,
a laugh like an iron bell
in a kitchen of fading desire
and a dawning realization
He used to be a white
but things fell apart,
the center could not hold
leaving him to savor the oak

This is rich and full - like a rare red wine. Beautifully written, with oh-so-much meaning.
ReplyDeleteSup, Gumbo.
ReplyDeleteYou paint with words. And I love art.
Thanks for sharing.
Also loved your Poles of Life and Death post. I'm 35 years old and heard my father say, "Love you too" last night for the first time that I can remember. The balance is delicate, yet we keep on moving forward with high hopes for all things.

I especially like "kitchen of fading desire" and "laugh like an iron bell". Beautiful piece, IG.
ReplyDeleteAh, that River Heartbreak. Canoed down that sucker one too many times, Irish. I am glad to say those days are long behind me. But I'll still take a nice sip of red, if you please.
