The crowd goes wild over a pop queen movie star getting her costume jacket back from some dude who bought it an auction. Isn’t he a sweet man? Yeah, it was for a good cause, raising money for a cancer charity. That’s nice. No offense to her but why the need for headlines? Can’t do something nice without a shot of celebrity attention? Something is messed up, willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on vanity. Let’s hope they won’t scream too loud when asked to put something fair towards the common good. Ah, who are we kidding, they will howl like someone stole their SUV.
Turn up the volume on whatever is crammed into our ears. Irrigate the nostrils with mist reeking of donut glaze or cotton candy. Anything to drown out the noise and reek that are the side effects of wrecking the planet. Distraction for the senses as parts of the world literally go up in smoke, while the so-called leaders take vacations or go golfing on the backs of working people who are killing themselves to survive. Breathe in, all you mad kings, you soulless bastards, and stop using precious oxygen attacking youngsters who want a planet on which we can live. But what’s that you say? Bitches already gave you yo money? So they can step off, to die in wildfires or hurricanes while you get fat in your bunkers? Yeah, no surprise there.
Breathe in the smoke. Shelter in place under the radiant parasol of the night sky. Marvel at days brighter and hotter than they have ever been. Sirens? What sirens? The rulers of 330 million separate empires plug their ears against the din. Pupils dilated by legal speed, twitching eyes struggling to focus on the latest commercials. Corporate shills hawking the promise of fast-food nirvana. Press lever, receive drug. Repeat, while the goddamn palaces burn down around their ears. The emperors chew loudly to drown out the voices of the abused, the oppressed, the melanin-rich but power-poor. Chicken sandwiches, man. Fuck you if you get in the way of their chicken sandwiches. Courtiers shrug when someone dies fighting over goddamned sandwiches. The emperors continue to gorge on Death, golden brown and delicious.

Magpie Tales 296: Appetites Obscura
Joachim Beuckelaer, 1560 via Magpie Tales
Incipient feast before our eyes,
Ignorant of the scandalmongers afar
of whom, it is said, do spread the truth
Anesthetized by full bellies, flushed loins
Citizen ears deafened by lust, greed, anger,
Blindly we face murderers in the bedroom

If Only I Could Stop...
If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics,Yeah, well there is the problem. I can't stop thinking about music and politics, even when I so desperately desire it. Part of that is just my own weirdness, part of it is the incessant yammering of pop culture and social media not giving it a rest. There is so much going on that I feel compelled to comment on, so many distractions, I cannot get it together. If I was paid for each reaction I have to the latest nuggets about gun control, Kanye West, Syria, or Miley Cyrus, I'd probably be wealthy enough to be "financially independent".
I would tell you that music is the expression of emotion
And that politics is merely the decoy of perception.*
But I am not paid for my exertions. Thus, I am not wealthy in that regard.
I have been silent for weeks now because I am overwhelmed by the blathering that passes for discourse in our shared media environment. So many things I could comment on, but I do not have the time or energy. So I'll leave it to the pundits, talking heads and chattering masses. Politics lately is making me tired, and music, well, music is making me slightly sad.
Do-nothings and twerking are not the breakfast of champions. Right now, so much has been said by others I feel there is nothing I can add without shrieking or weeping. And no one, especially me, wants to see that debacle.
I believe this state of affairs exists because of the tensions that bind me. Politics I can ignore to no great harm to my psyche, but music means too much to just set it aside. Coupled with my obsessions about food, I am all set to be uneasy in the media environment these days.
So, I won't use this post to rant about music and politics. As to food, let me say that I have been thinking about it in the gaps where I was not thinking about music and politics. About what other people are eating, what I want to eat and where I can get it. This has given me the urge to write about food, which I must say I have been doing, just not here.
And that is a story for another time. I'll keep you posted on that score.
Suffice to say that all this mental meandering has left me in quite a state. Thinking about food often leads me to thinking about travel, because much of what I am curious to eat is better experienced in its native surroundings. Plus, there are people I want to meet in those places I want to eat. Here, there, and everywhere, food is often better when shared. My difficulty in traveling, meeting and eating is that difficulty common to the modern era: the lack of time and money.
So what is this all about? Ladies and gentlemen and those in between, I really do not know. This ramble of mine had no specific agenda, I simply felt the need to communicate to you where I my head and heart seem to be. Where they are, is somewhere between the poles and the equator, wishing I could break bread with you all.
That, and wishing I could stop thinking about music and politics.

A Brief Word About America
In the run up to the recent elections, and in the noisy din of its aftermath, there has been much talk by the sore losers that they needed to "take back America" and that they"lost America". Such bloviation angers and saddens me.
America belongs to all Americans, not one ideology or otherwise arbitrarily defined socio-economic-political grouping of citizens.
America is a grand, shared idea. No one gained it or lost it, because it was never theirs to possess.

Anarchy in the USA, with Dinner
Some people may have the impression that I am a very organized person.
That I cannot function without complete control.
That I am a liberal.
That I am a conservative.
They may think I am a socialist, or perhaps a closet authoritarian. But they would be wrong, in the main. I am many different things for different needs, and one size does not fit all when it comes to me, myself and I.
What I am, mostly, is hungry. And this I believe has made me, of all things, an anarchist.
You laugh, I know. At least, you chuckled. That statement seems absurd, but contains a kernel of truth. One of the definitions of 'anarchy' is:
I wasn't exactly following the recipe suggestion on the packet of spices I had. I wasn't exactly following the directions on a recipe I had tracked down from a source I have reason to believe is credible. In hindsight, the only recipe I think I could be said to follow was my own.
This has been true for years. I simply did not possess the clarity of vision to know it. I am a self-taught cook, born out of curiosity (the early years) and true necessity (my fairly recent past), and I know I have volumes to learn about food and how to cook it. I still work on gathering the courage to step into the kitchen and simply cook.
It needs to be done, dear ones. The jackasses have brayed loudly this election year, trying to shame me or scare me into being just like them lest I end up a victim, a fool or in hell. I know I am not the first two, and I believe hell is what you make of it. Bleat loudly they may, but I will never allow my salvation or my damnation to be defined by the prejudices of others.
They will never succeed, because I will always have the freedom to cook what I want.
I can make my pasta sauce with yellow tomatoes if I so desire, regardless of which verses of whatever canonical text are screamed at me. My gumbo will be MY gumbo, and taste damned good, no matter whose buttocks grace the chairs in the chambers of government. No one has, nor will they ever have, the right to tell me what to eat or how to cook it. Ultimately, I hold the knife, I stir the pot, it is my hand that puts the spices in the pot.
This is as it should be, my friends. I need that bit of territory I can call my own; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are grounded in that notion, and they all start within. This is why cooking something for myself is a declaration of independence. The skillet in my hand, the cook pot on my stove, these are my sovereign lands. I'll be honored to share my borders with you, if you find yourself hungry like me.

Absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal. How about that, my lovelies? My belly tells me it is true. I had been meditating on this idea for a long time, but it was a type of curry, rogan josh, that made it blossom for me. Nothing like putting a healthy dollop of ground spices into hot oil to give one a swift kick in the senses. I was making it last Sunday, and while stirring in the yogurt I had my moment of clarity.

On the Abhorrence of Willful Ignorance: A Rant
August 29th, probably about 6:53 AM to ???. A good shower spoiled. A rant, pure and simple. I will leave it as I wrote it, ugly but necessary.
I am tired of being told I don't love my country because I support things like Obamacare, don't support trickle-down economics and think it is a bad idea to gut social programs for the sake of maintaining tax cuts that DO NOT create jobs and pay for wars we should not have started or continually feed the maw of the military-industrial death machine just to prove we are The Chosen Country, more badass than any other supposed badasses out there. Manifest Destiny can suck it. Do we need to defend ourselves? Sure. That is a necessity. But so is treating people humanely and doing our best for as many as we can, and that doesn't mean depriving someone of unemployment insurance so we can go bomb the hell out of people whose countries we shouldn't have invaded to begin with.
I'm fed up with the notion that I or anyone else is a horrible person because we believe women should have full rights to control their own bodies, and not have that right taken away by men or any deliberately irrational individuals or groups who choose to believe in a different religion. I am especially sickened when this assumption that "We know better than you what is right for you" is based on fanciful wishes rather than factual information. "Certain secretions" and gradations of rape do not exist in reality. That supposedly well-educated people believe those things at all, and worse, portray them as reality make me want to scream. That they want to be in power to set laws based on their deliberate ignorance is frightening. As my friend Kellie so eloquently said here,
I'm sick of being told this is a Christian nation just because the founding fathers happened to be Christians. Take off the blinders, do a little thinking or at least pay attention (oh, my, what ever will they do? Think? That would be too much work!) and you would realize that Americans aren't all Christians, nor are they required to be, nor do they have believe in a higher power at all (Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion; remember the Bill of Rights?). The concept of "God" is not exclusive to Christianity, and Jesus wasn't quoted in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution or the Bill of Rights*. That the word "Lord" appears in the signature section of the Constitution doesn't count, because to say "In the Year of our Lord" was a common way to express dates in that era, and does not even imply belief in all of the people who signed the document. "God" and "Jesus" ('cause if you want to claim Christianity, then you gotta claim Jesus) do not appear at all in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. The word God appears once in the Declaration of Independence, in a curiously written sentence reading in part:
Speaking of marriage, shut up about the so-called sanctity of marriage. How many times was Ronald Reagan married? Newt Gingrich (Three's the charm, eh? Classy, too, talking divorce with a recovering cancer patient)? Joe Walsh (the obnoxious Tea Party jerk, not the Eagles guitar player)? By the way, Joe, how is that payment of over $100,000 dollars in unpaid child support going? Oh, that's right you spent $35,000 or so on your political campaign, rather than on your kids. You don't get to talk about sanctity or "Defend Marriage" when you yourself have no respect for it. So until you can get it right, shut up about denying other people to right to find their bliss with a life partner.
To beat the marriage horse bloody, let me ask this question: which of the eight or so Biblical definitions of marriage would you have us codify or "defend"? Hmm? Which one? Here's a handy list*** to help you choose:
Onward to death tools, er, guns! A few words to the Second Amendment freaks about gun ownership: Shut up about having your lethal toys taken away from you. That isn't going to happen. But the Founding Fathers did not have assault weapons. And you are delusional if you think that having everyone armed is going to make crime deterrence easier. Yeah, so you and your bone-headed cowboy friends are going to be tactical sharpshooters based on a pistol course and a license? Even if you take basic safety courses, that in no way is guaranteed to give you the presence of mind to calmly identify a correct target in a chaotic scene and be able to precisely take them out. If you do, you will be lucky, not skilled. And how in the world do you expect to do that in a place like a dark theater or crowded school campus? Do you not understand the concept of "fog of war" and crossfires? Even the police cannot be so self-assured in broad daylight, as the horrific shootings at the Empire State Building confirm.
Furthermore, until you can read the Bill of Rights and exhibit understanding you have no room to comment on the supposed efforts to take away your penis substitutes. The Second Amendment says:
Time to wrap it up. I'm getting tired. Parting shot: disagreement with your expressed beliefs or religion or politics does not constitute a war on your faith or your religion or your party. It is disagreement, nothing more. As I stated before , opinions are most certainly allowed in our free-speech society. But to paraphrase Monty Python's Dennis The Peasant, ill-informed opinions are, like strange women lying in ponds distributing swords, no basis for a system of government. So grow up, stop whining and remove your heads from your asses. It's easier to understand reality that way.
Here endeth the rant.

That they want to be in power to set laws based on their deliberate ignorance is frightening. As my friend Kellie so eloquently said here,
"It's having knowledge (re: power) being legally denied to me for no other reason than because I AM A WOMAN....It's being viewed as less of a person because I am a woman.
Yeah, it's like that. That anyone, especially aspiring policy makers, is secure enough in their own ignorance to think that just because they believe it, it must be true, is scary enough. That they would think they have a right to inflict their ignorance and delusion on others is horrifying. You can have all the opinions you want, that's allowed. But your belief in something in no way gives you the right to force others to live according to your will. This is especially true when it comes to stupid, privileged males (who cannot get pregnant, whether they are raped or just said yes) telling women (who can, and do, get pregnant under all sorts of circumstances) they have no rights to make decisions about their bodies or their pregnancies. I don't want laws based on delusional beliefs, I want them based on facts.
An aside: Hey, Paul Ryan? Rape is not a "method of conception", it is a crime of violence against someone. Rape is rape, and you don't get to side-step it by making the issue about getting pregnant, when it is really about horrible violence. As an acquaintance of mine said, saying rape is a method of conception is like saying "vandalism is a method of redecorating." Rape is a crime, you jerk, and you shouldn't forget that. Also, quit touting your so-called Christian faith when your self-professed hero is a fascist atheist.
The word God appears once in the Declaration of Independence, in a curiously written sentence reading in part:
"...the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them..."
Huh? Nature's God? 'Scuse me, but what does that even mean? That doesn't say the God of Christ, or anything about Christianity (actually sounds kind of pagan) other than using the English word 'God'. Know what "Allah" means in English? Huh, do you? Depending on which dialect or branch of Arabic you use, it means among other things "God, Allah, father, the Creator, maker." How about Krishna? Or Yahweh? Translate those into English and what do you get? You get God!** Also, news flash: none of those documents belong to any specific ideology or -ism. The United States population is a lot more complicated than a Sunday School kindergarten classroom. So shut up about God making us a Christian nation based on three documents that say nothing about Christianity and the Christian God being the foundation of our society.
I am infuriated by the notion that there are those who want to deny basic rights and humanity to some of their fellow citizens by codifying discrimination against them, based on whom they choose to love. Being lesbian, gay, bi or transgender does not render someone a non-citizen or (more importantly) nonhuman. You have no right, morally or legally, to deny rights to someone just because you don't like the idea of men loving men, or women loving women or any human loving another human. As Anne Hathaway so eloquently said, "Love is a human experience, not a political statement." Also, your personal disapproval of same-sex marriages in no way gives you the right or moral authority to deny civil rights to someone. Don't like gay marriage? Then don't marry a gay person! Marriage isn't mandatory, anyway. Remember the Constitution and that Bill of Rights thingie? Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and all that? Well, your ignorance and bigotry have no right to take away those from anyone else. So shut up.
To beat the marriage horse bloody, let me ask this question: which of the eight or so Biblical definitions of marriage would you have us codify or "defend"? Hmm? Which one? Here's a handy list*** to help you choose:
- Man and Woman: Genesis 2:24
- Man and Women: Genesis 4:19 - Polygamy! The more the merrier!
- Man and his brother's widow: Genesis 38:6-10 - Impregnate your brother's widow. Awesome, until you get to the part where God killed Onan for masturbation instead of impregnation.
- Man and wives and concubines: Genesis 20:10 and Judges 19:1-30 - It's good to be the King, not so good to be a wife or a concubine. Yikes.
- Rapist and victim: Deuteronomy 22:28-29 - Rape a virgin, pay her dad some silver, call it a marriage. Way to be a role model.
- Man and Woman and the Woman's slaves: Genesis 16:1-6 and Genesis 30:4-5 - Double bonus for the uncaring: if the wife is barren, then just knock up her slaves, er, servants!
- Male soldier and Captured Woman: Numbers 31:1-18 and Deuteronomy 21:11-14 - Nothing says 'man and wife' like killing all the enemy males and stealing their daughters and wives and making them your own.
- Male and female slaves: Exodus 21:4 - What, being property isn't bad enough, you gotta force them to marry? Jerks.
The Bible's definitions of marriage involve monogamy...and polygamy, war, rape and slavery. So don't give me that sanctimonious crap about same-sex marriage (which presumably is based on love, just like hetero marriages) being unnatural or an abomination.
Furthermore, until you can read the Bill of Rights and exhibit understanding you have no room to comment on the supposed efforts to take away your penis substitutes. The Second Amendment says:
Read it carefully, jugheads. It's all one clause, and has to be taken in its entirety to make sense. It is in the context of a "well Regulated militia". Or do you not understand how that part modifies having a militia? Also, note the use of the words 'regulated' and infringed. that's important. This amendment says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed because a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of the state. Hmm...doesn't the military do that now? Oh, and what militia are you a part of? Hmm? Guarding the state of Buttheadistan? The right to bear arms is supported by the Bill of Rights, but it also does not simply say you can have all the guns you want. So stop whining, go home and make love to your avatars of violence."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Time to wrap it up. I'm getting tired. Parting shot: disagreement with your expressed beliefs or religion or politics does not constitute a war on your faith or your religion or your party. *Conveniently linked for your edification and delight. You're welcome.
**I realize that Krishna and Yahweh and Allah are more complex than are easily explained in a rant, but the fact remains that they are God or a god-analogue. It is the concept of a supreme being that solely belongs to Christians which draws my ire.
***I stumbled across this link, which spurred me into verifying the quoted passages in the Bible I received upon my confirmation. Yes, the website is satire, but the passages confirmed the spoof. And, I learned some new things!

Chasing Chaff With A Spoon
So much going on inside and outside, I'm dizzy and struggling with what I wanted to say next. The Shiny Things are bright and plentiful in the moment. I wanted to be eloquent and witty with a point...
...but I keep losing focus. I think it is fatigue combined with politics-induced exasperation. My brain is full and my tolerance level is way low. The thing is, I want to avoid getting sucked into the quagmire looming before the 2012 election.
But the idiots and the liars, they won't shut up. Can't seem to avoid them. This election year in particular has seemed one long case of the Nasties, and the lunatics in charge of the asylum. The continuing spew from the Party of the Tea, and right-wing bigots, and the downright hatred some Americans seem to have for everyone who isn't like them...makes me sad and sleepy. The latest abhorrent remarks by Ann Coulter regarding 'stupid single mothers' is a case in point.
Bah. I'm too worn out for a rant. It's there, folks, and I don't mean to disappoint. It will just have to be a post for another time, as I am sure I will have to get it out of my system.
Then I can get back to something truly invigorating and creative. You know, stuff that really matters, like good stories.

Human, Kind
In over three months of unemployment, I have spent a majority fraction of my waking hours thinking about, looking for, and worrying over finding a job. This we know, as I have beat that particular horse too often in the annals of Irish Gumbo. This week was no different.
Right now, dear ones, I don't want to dissect the job hunt. I want to get something different out of my head. Something that has been incubating in there for weeks, and that I finally put my finger on today.
In my time that has not been spent on job searching activities, I have had the opportunity for steady engagement with current events. Not always to my benefit, either, as I tend to mouth off at the computer or the television when perusing or watching the news. I have had many opportunities to indulge my love of reading and research in following threads on a wide range of topics. When something catches my interest I savor the opportunity to follow it until I decide I have learned enough, not when the dictates of the outside world say I am done.
In an election year this carries noticeable risk. Especially when one has strong feelings and opinions about many things involving the human condition. This year it has been especially acute given all the attention lavished on the issues of what constitutes marriage, families, gender politics and equality. When this is mashed up with regressive social thinking, bigotry, hatred and exclusion, it becomes a big thought bomb. Today it blew up in my face.
A lot of wind has blown from the mouths of conservative, right-wing, supposedly religious people in the past few months. A lot of foul, obnoxious wind. Much talk has been aimed at the supposed damage that has been done to "God, America and Family" by those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) people. We have presidential candidates signing pledges vowing to be faithful to their spouses and to uphold the U.S. Constitution, and opposing same-sex marriages, while continuing to maintain the false premise that homosexuality is merely a "choice". We have politicians who have been divorced multiple times (including cheating on a spouse while trying to divorce them) telling us our morals are corrupt and "America has lost its way".
There are people who call themselves serious contenders for the office of President of the United States, and seem to think nothing of condemning lives they obviously don't understand. They claim to stand for the ideals of a country founded on the principles of life and liberty written into the U.S. Constitution. It is a poor joke to claim one stands for individual freedom while ostracizing and attempting to legally exclude whole groups of people from the benefits and protections of the law. It is abhorrent to use hate and ignorance to tell anyone, not just Americans, you don't deserve to be treated as an equal human being because you are a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person.
What that amounts to is saying: you are not human.
It is a classic sign of a fascist mindset to designate a class of people as The Others, The Different, The Outsiders, in order to galvanize the remaining people with fear and hate, as a method of exerting political control. Look at the governments of Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, the Soviet Union of Stalin. Look at McCarthyism in the 1950's. The thread continues into today. Look at the idiocy that spews from the organizations supporting Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, any of them. Better yet, look at the statements and actions of the people themselves. Signing ridiculous pledges. Claiming that the morals of the country are being destroyed by people who don't marry, or want to marry a person of the same gender; that ruin lies down the path of acknowledging someone who was born one gender realizes they are really another.
You know who else makes hateful, ignorant, repellent statements like that? Groups like the Taliban, and other religious fundamentalists. Groups who want to control what you feel, who you love, what life you want to live. It is terribly insulting to me, and incredibly dangerous to others, to be told that my morals are corrupt...because I don't think the way they do.
My morals are just fine, thank you. I don't need some ignorant, power-hungry buffoons deciding for me what is right or proper, especially when their definition of right and proper is based on taking away freedoms and arbitrarily designating some people as not worthy of love, respect or protection under the law.
To sit and listen to someone slander tens of thousands of their fellow citizens, to hear the hypocrisy behind asking for their votes while working to deny them basic rights, is abhorrent beyond endurance. They cannot claim to know what is best for all citizens, because they have demonstrated they do not have empathy for or understanding of all those citizens. Anyone who cannot see the crippling inconsistencies in their ideology, and expects me to ignore those inconsistencies, has no business running the country.
I am not a lesbian. I am not gay. I am not bisexual. I am not transgender. I am a heterosexual male. Most important of all, I am a human being, as is anyone who identifies as LGBT.
To condemn people to the status of sub-human, not equal, because of their inherent identity is probably the most revolting perversion of the American ideal I have witnessed in my lifetime. The claim that we are a compassionate, humane and free society will remain a joke if intolerance and hate become the rule of law.
We all deserve love and respect based on who we are, not on someones ignorant and hateful definition of who they think we are. I cannot accept, will not accept, will not support any political hopeful who wants to exclude human beings from society based on lives different than their own. Different does not equate with wrong.
Heterosexual. Lesbian. Gay. Bisexual. Transgender. We all identify as one of those. The common thread is that we are all human beings. It saddens me to think there are forces out there that want to deny many of us our humanity. Those forces must be opposed.
The STFU Files: On Not Being A Weiner
Begging your pardon, dear readers, I must veer off into current events (of the American political variety), so please bear with me while I get this out of my head. Kind o f like passing a mental kidney stone.
(Ahem)
First of all, let me say up front that Anthony Weiner (you know the one) is a dumbass of the first order. But it isn't so much for the "media transfers" he made. To me, the pictures and the texting aren't the main issue. It's the lying about it that really kills me.
Have none of these guys learned anything, anything at all in this era of New Media and the 24/7 news cycle?
Lots of things get texted and sent that, in the hands of someone with malice or righteous justice on their minds, could have a lot of hay made out of them. Agendas abound in the information age, so its best to make yours clear and stay ahead of the curve. Or the pack, if one has reason to believe one has a lot of ill-wishers out there.
I reckon a lot of people are horrified on moral grounds, too. And a case can be made for that, I suppose, if moral purity were the sole arbiter of fitness for office.
But.
I. Don't. Care. It's fruitless and boring. Boring.
If one is looking to politicians for moral role models, perhaps one should recalibrate one's notions of a role model. People will argue that poor decision making in personal life automatically translates into poor decision making in professional life. True? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the individual. Just because someone is imbued with a supposed true moral compass, by themselves or by their followers, does not mean the decisions they make are the right or good ones. Don't believe me? Then refresh your memory by looking back to all the bad decisions based on bad and wrong information (and right information that was flat out ignored) that got the country involved in the mess that was Iraq. That people lied and so many died...Somehow, that's more obscene to me, in light of the lives destroyed, resources squandered, in a war that was prosecuted on falsehoods.
Nothing Weiner did rises to the level of national security risk. He needs to apologize to his family, friends, the women with whom he was involved and to his constituents, not the world. This is why the nature of his offense doesn't really interest me. I don't expect anyone to live their lives without doing something that will most likely be considered as stupid, especially in the political arena. What I would hope they wouldn't do, is lie about it if confronted with something, justified or not.
After all, isn't it supposed to be an admirable trait, to own ones' supposed transgressions?
To paraphrase Dieter from Sprockets, "This habit of exposing yourself has become tiresome!"

On Not Celebrating Death
I thought I would be able to scrape by without commenting on the most significant current event to hit the news this week. I speak, of course, of the death of Osama bin Laden. I thought I could wait for it to pass, but then I realized I can't do the dance of joy, like so many others seem to be overjoyed to do.
I had and have no sympathy whatsoever for bin Laden and his partners-in-crime in Al Qaeda. What he planned and what they implemented ranks among the all-time most heinous crimes in the history of the human race. By all but the most pacifistic of viewpoints, it is hard to say he did not get what he deserved. If there is any truth to claims that abhorrent criminals will be dealt with appropriately in an afterlife, then he is a prime candidate for an eternity in hell. Ultimately, his life ended in the only way that seemed possible given the circumstances in which the termination of it originated.
One problem: accounts of the afterlife differ, in generalities and specifics. It is those differences that underpin some of the most violent disagreements ever experienced in human relations. While many would like to believe he is now in for never-ending torment, by his lights (and those of many others) he may be receiving a hero's welcome.
I think it would be most fitting if his soul (assuming such a thing existed) simply faded away into nothingness, no torment, no reward. Then it would be as if he had never been. This is perhaps the best that could be hoped for in the case of someone who deliberately put themselves so far outside the realm of human empathy and human kindness.
Terrorism did not originate with bin Laden, and it will not end with his death. The circumstances that allowed him and his ideology to flourish still exist, and nearly 10 years of American empire-building and backhanded fence-mending have done not nearly enough to mitigate them. That mitigation is perhaps ultimately an impossible task. The change has to happen in the hearts and minds of all citizens of the world. Al Qaeda may wither away, dying like a snake with its head cut off. But the ideas that drove bin Laden and his ilk will not. The ideas will mutate, like a virus, and the people who take them to heart will find new and terrible ways to slaughter innocents in the name of fanaticism.
Extremist will not forget. Even without a body, or a fixed landmark around which to gather, the circumstances of bin Laden's death will give fuel to the myth-making machinery of both sides in this conflict. That he died in a battle with U.S. forces only serves to increase his status as a warrior hero.
It would have been much better to have captured him alive and put him on trial. Ultimately, his fate would almost certainly have been the same, but it is the rule of law we supposedly subscribe to as Americans, and justice is what the law demands. In this case, what was served was vengeance, not necessarily justice. Vengeance usually breeds more violence, and that seems a likely outcome in this case.
Our military has shown themselves to be tough, perseverant and capable of incredible accomplishments in the worst of situations. I think the reward for them now should be our gratitude, but more importantly, I think they should come home. This is a "Mission Accomplished" in truth, far removed from the farce of that perpetrated under the same name in Iraq. There is no longer any sense in keeping them in harm's way, with the goal achieved.
Surely a great evil has been removed from the world. Truly this is the only way the story could have ended. Still, I cannot bring myself to celebrate death. This whole terrible mess originated in death, nearly 3,000 innocent people. Since 2001, American casualties in Afghanistan have amounted to about 1,465 deaths. Total coalition deaths are around 2,340. Total wounded estimates are in the tens of thousands.
In the name of the pursuit of one man, we have lost:
Nearly 10 years.
Over $400,000,000,000 estimated cost (and rising) of the war to date.
1,465 Americans killed.
That is why I cannot bring myself to dance and clap my hands with glee.
His was a death that had to be, but celebrating it makes me feel too much like the very killers we claim to abhor. The best that I can manage is a certain grim satisfaction, and a hope that his like doesn't plague the human race ever again.

Was That A Flying Pig That Just Crossed A Blue Moon?
Weird goings-on here in Casa DeL Gumbo. The television is on. And it isn't the news hour.
Seriously. Not only is it not news, it isn't a documentary, a food show or a sitcom.
Nope, what I am watching is...sports. Specifically, hockey. Stanley Cup playoffs, Game 7, between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins. Its tied 2 -2 at the moment, halfway through the third period.
Good lord, man, I haven't watched any sports for more than highlight clips in...well, I can't remember how long.
(pause) Sort of cheap shot by a Bruins defenseman on a Canadien player.
Well, then...I'll root for the Habs. And keep an eye out for more of those flying pigs.
Epilogue: They lost. Dangit.

The Revolution Will Be Gender Specific Because God Said So*
Today is International Women's Day, a fact that finally sank in after hearing it reported on both radio and television news. I confess, I knew of it, but not much about it. What struck me the most, partly in hindsight, about the day is how too many seem to have forgotten or had never acknowledged that women are not property, are not inferior simply by accident of birth. They deserve to have a say over their destinies, their political and social fabrics...their culture and basic human rights.
Why is this so hard for some to understand?
I watched a news report from Egypt, post-"revolution", on demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square to demand that women be given a bigger voice and equal rights in this, the new Egypt. So what happened?
They were harassed and attacked by groups of men. You know, the men who helped overthrow Mubarak and help bring democracy to Egypt. Or perhaps they meant deMOCKracy, seeing as they felt women had no place in governing the country, and in the words of some of the men, women "already had enough rights". Way to go, freedom fighters! (clap......clap......clap).
I slapped my head in exasperation.
I slapped my head in exasperation.
I sat in disbelief, my curiosity turning slowly to disgust as I watched footage of a somewhat slovenly looking man berate and point fingers at a woman demonstrator, telling her she had no business here, to go home.
So this is what the world cheered for? This is what the world thought was the overthrow of an oppressive government, dictatorial in most ways of practical importance? Ah, yes, throw off the shackles so you can put them on someone else. Not surprisingly, the role of religion (in this case, Islam) was dragged into the mess, with (you guessed it) the men saying it was against Islam for women to have the same rights as men, that women should not be president.
One report I read quoted some of the men shouting things like "Go home, wash clothes!". Which apparently, many of the men have not yet figured out on their own, judging by the rattiness of some of the apparel. And, seriously? If you are going to argue violently with someone over human rights? Don't do it wearing a dirty jacket emblazoned with the logo of a well-known European car company. It cuts into credibility, bro...
When the demonstrations began in Egypt weeks ago, it was scary and exciting to watch. One could only hope that things really were going to change for the better, and that a freer, more democratic society was in the offing. We cheered, we urged them on as men and women risked their lives to protest and demand change. But somewhere along the way, a whole lot of people forgot that women make up almost half of the Egyptian population.
And if the government of a country will not grant the equal rights of citizenship to almost half of its population, it cannot claim to be democratic. Don't forget one of the definitions, perhaps the most important definition, of democratic:
"Pertaining to or characterized by the principle of political or social equality for all"
For it to be real, that means no exceptions. Possession of testicles does not grant authority to deny rights to those possessed of breasts. Until those who want to govern Egypt (or any other country with revolution in the offing) can treat all of their citizens with respect and equality, I cannot and would not offer any support beyond "Good luck, call me when you make some real progress".
One parting shot: The report I mentioned above also quoted some men as shouting "You are not married; go find a husband!" I did a bit of a spit take upon reading that humdinger.
So, my marriage counselor friend, where do you suggest the women find these "husbands"? Seems to me the pickings are mighty, mighty slim, if the majority of choices are knuckleheads like that sloganeer.

Music and Politics and a Sweet Ride
After watching our boy Richard Engel in Iraq, then Egypt (see above) and now Libya, I have to say I'm very impressed. Boy's got stones, he does.
But maybe its fatigue settling in, me feeling a bit punchy...but I saw the original newscast of the happenings in that video, and watched the video tonight, and both times I had the same thought:
Wouldn't it have been hilarious if, in the background, a tricked-out Impala low rider drove by, blaring an Arabic-language version of "F**k Tha Police"?
Yep. I'm tired.

Weapons Grade Stupidity
I apologize for the following post. I'm sailing another sea of unbloggableness, and the political slant is something that won't leave me alone, so I must purge. Like kidney stones and bad dreams, this too shall pass. Thank you for your patience...
There is a bit of conventional wisdom that goes something like this:
If the person you are having dinner with is nice to you but rude to the waiter, that person is not a nice person. Avoid that person.I think there is a corollary to that advice, and it goes something like this:
If a public figure emphatically claims something to be that which it never was, and their claim can easily be refuted, they are insulting the intelligence of the listener. And that figure is not a nice person. On January 8th, Rebecca Mansour, an official for the Sarah Palin PAC, appeared on the Tammy Bruce* radio show, claiming that the symbols on that infamous map of theirs were never intended to be gun sights. Laughably, at Tammy Bruce's suggestion, Ms. Mansour agreed that they weren't gun sights, they were "surveyor's marks".
Surveyor's marks. Really. And I suppose "Don't retreat, RELOAD!" really meant "Don't back up the minivan, just rearrange the luggage!"
I really cannot fathom why so many people seem to think that Sarah Palin and others of the same mindset are worthy of our votes for public office. Not only are they blind to their own shortcomings, they expect us to be blind as well.
These people aren't exhibiting much intelligence of their own, and they are blatantly insulting our collective intelligence. Would you really want them in positions of power?
They are not nice people. Don't have dinner with them.
*To be fair, I was only vaguely familiar with Tammy Bruce before this past weekend. The miracle of the Interwebs made it easy to rectify that, although now I'm ambivalent about the knowledge. Ms. Bruce has described herself as "a gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, Tea Party Independent Conservative", with her show promoted as "a chick with a gun and a microphone." That kind of glib, moronic attempt at a 'ballsy' persona is just as unimpressive coming from a woman as it is coming from a man. Too bad she doesn't take that gun and shoot her microphone, thus sparing us all the irritation of another oxygen thief befouling the airwaves.
To those who left comments on my "Politics and Violence" post of January 9th, thank you. It's nice to know I was not alone.

Sick Of Politics and Violence
I am aghast at the latest violent tragedy bleed all over our collective consciousness: the shooting of those unfortunates in Tucson last Saturday. So many victims, so much pain and trauma. Already the jackals of the left and the right have started to mine it for political gain, or just plain 'spreading the hate'.
It's probably safe to say that no one in their right mind would agree that the shootings were justifiable or explainable in the context of political beliefs. This horrible crime was most likely perpetrated by someone who truly had lost their mental bearings, their ability to understand the difference between right and wrong. Suggesting or implying violence against others to resolve political differences would never occur to someone in their right mind to begin with, would it? Sadly, no:
But I'm digressing from my point. The fact remains that people got killed (including a 9-year old girl) for no good reason, and no matter where you stand in the political spectrum, this is a horrible, horrible crime. I can only hope that, in your prayers tonight, you pray for everyone involved.

"Don't retreat, reload!"
- Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska
"If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies."
- Sharron Angle, former member of the Nevada State Assembly
"If ballots don't work, bullets will."
- Joyce Kaufman, Radio host, Tea Party activist
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
- Currently serving United States Congresswoman from Minnesota, leader of the Tea Party Caucus, paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson
"Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they've gotta realize there are consequences to that action."I know, I know, it's just words and they really didn't have anything to do with the shootings. But it does make one wonder when bloviating hate-mongers like Sarah Palin start backpedaling so fast (like removing this map from her PAC website) it is amazing they haven't broken their ankles.
- Currently serving Congresswoman from Arizona Gabrielle Giffords

Farging Bastiches Friday: The Curmudgeon Files
Apologies, dear readers, as I must indulge myself a rant, in bullet point form:
All of then above items I have recently heard or seen in person or through various forms of media, and the irritation factor reached critical mass, hence this post. It may be a long winter, folks...maybe I'll just put my fingers in my ears and shout "La, la, la..."
THINGS WHAT HAVE BEEN BUGGING ME LATELY:
- Being possessed of a pulse, a uniform and a job does not make one a hero. Being 'heroic' (i.e. showing great courage, exhibiting noble qualities, and great achievements) makes one a hero. Calling someone a hero because they got out of bed and put on their pants only cheapens the ideal, and means that if everyone is a "hero", no one is a hero. You want to be a hero? Then do something truly heroic.
- Being possessed of great religious conviction does not equate with being possessed of superior morals or ideas. If you ask a stranger what faith they profess, ostensibly to have a polite discussion about belief, only to quickly turn it into a thinly veiled lecture on why their relationship with God isn't the "right" relationship, and that yours is, then you have disqualified yourself from being a truly humble practitioner of faith. No one can truly know the mind of God, so don't even try, you hypocrites. Corollary: When the party you have just insulted and patronized by denying the legitimacy of their belief system reacts by disagreeing with you, said disagreement does not constitute persecution of you as a believer of a different faith, nor does it constitute an insult to your faith. The person simply does not believe what you believe. Different belief is just that; different, not wrong. So get over yourselves, you tinpot martyrs. Cry your crocodile tears somewhere else.
- Being a newly elected Republicanfacisticteabaggernutjob U.S. Representative or Senator does NOT mean you are possessed of a God-given, "will-o-the-people" mandate to enact every ill-thought out piece of legislation in your Big Box of Crazy Ideas. You won that seat because people wanted to change things, and because this supposed democracy is heavily weighted to the two-party system, the people who wanted to change things voted for you because YOU WEREN'T THE GUY/GAL ALREADY IN OFFICE, not because your stupid ideas and close-minded thinking were so attractive. There were no real, viable third-party alternatives. So get your heads out of your own asses, and stop looking in the mirror so damn much.
- Being excited about getting up at 3:00 a.m. on Black Friday does not make you the envy of the neighborhood, or an example to be imitated. It does not make you worthy of respect, and it does not make you nearly as cool and fascinating as you think you are. What it does do is make you a tool. A Pavlovian, programmed consumerist tool, beholden to whatever megacorporations have hoodwinked you into believing that the latest/greatest app/gadget/machine/toy is the only way to show how much you care for the people you want to give gifts to. Good thing the product life cycles are so short, that way you can do it all again next year! Seriously, though? Do you really want to be at the end of your days, thinking "Wow, it was so cool that I was the first one with an xBox 3000, way back in '10!" Hate to break it to you, Sparky: NO ONE CARES.
- F-book (or any other Internet-intensive New Economy company) announcing it will be "making a play" for the market by offering services that other companies already offer...is not news. So, all you local news anchors hawking thinly veiled ads for said companies under the aegis of "Consumer Watch" human interest stories? Shut up. Just shut up. I. Don't. Care. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
- Putting any humble food (like french fries) on a pretty plate, and taking a glossy picture of it, and adding the word "GOURMET" to the description, does not make automatically that food "gourmet". If you want to make french fries "gourmet", let's see them fresh-cut to order, twice-fried, properly drained and served with side of say, chipotle aioli or homemade mushroom ketchup. Plus, a waiter should bring them to the table. DO NOT let some bored high school kid dump a block of batter-coated frozen fries into stale grease, oversalt them and dump them (undrained) into what will become a grease-soaked recycled paper boat, accompanied by a fistful of 'ketchup' packets. Really, if you want to impress people, just make them hot, crispy and with the right amount of salt. If you can do that simple thing well, you will go far in life.
All of then above items I have recently heard or seen in person or through various forms of media, and the irritation factor reached critical mass, hence this post. It may be a long winter, folks...maybe I'll just put my fingers in my ears and shout "La, la, la..."

Electioneering
Surfeit of color and noise
and that was just the crap
in the mailbox, every day
Forests bled to extinction
More shiny noises from the box
Bright hues and gaudy wraps
So many promises! like God and
Marilyn Monroe delivered to your door
The palate dulls, hearing fades
eyesight dims under sensory fatigue
No, under siege! Because you cannot escape
bleat, blather and bother, beyond the end
Necessary evil, this binge and purge
of the body politic, they tell us to care,
we must care, but too many broken promises,
shattered hopes, have eaten our trust.
